A special project as this is home. Located in Hyderabad, it was originally constructed as a single-family home. When we bought the house 18 years ago, it became our first project as a studio. We modified it to create two independent homes, each roughly 4000 square feet, within the same structure and incorporated skylights in the central core. This year we got a chance to remodel part of this house where I live with my family. I was excited about creating a new material board and collaborating with furniture designers who I admire.
Entrance
The first thing that someone notices while entering is that the entrance foyer, is naturally lit by a large skylight. The piano, which is my 20-year-old son Rohan’s biggest stress reliever, is framed perfectly by the west-facing window at the end of the. So, as one enters the home, the foyer feels like a warm hug with ample light and complementing colour palette. The Bastar Console by This & That is nestled along the photo montage of the family.
Dining room
Whether it’s for having a quick bite or for an elaborate dinner, the dining room provides for a serene yet cosy space for a hearty meal. The dining space is embraced by north light from the window spanning end-to-end between the walls.
The 9 feet long dining table from Tianu is covered in a linen tablecloth, the dining chairs in light blue fabric add a pop of colour to the space. Vases on the dining table are from an antique shop in Italy.
More about the project
I was also excited about bringing in all the tactile and not so tactile elements, values, and memories that we have built as a family. And to see how the new responds to the old. Old that is from several generations ago which I had kept safeguarded all these years. I was excited about finally being able to hang art from multiple disciplines and eras, and to see how they talk to each other. And to experience this energy with family and friends.
We are a family of five. My husband is in the family business and is an avid reader. I am an Architect who eats sleeps and dreams design. Our two boys, 20-year-old Rohan is a budding Computer Scientist and 16-year-old Anshul is a budding cricketer. And my mother who is a great cook and a crafts person. All of us are super passionate about our own interests. We all have long days focussed on our field of interest and what we love coming back home to every evening, is the comfort of being at home and with each other. Our big criteria while remodelling was to make sure it was extremely comfortable and help us recover after a long day.
The ash grey walls and ceiling form a neutral backdrop for an array of artwork to be displayed. The terrazzo by Bharat Floorings added to the neutral shades of grey and radiates a calming vibe throughout the space. The art, antique and objects in the living room are collected across several generations.
A space that exudes simplicity with modernism at its core. The entrance foyer is one such space which is greeted by a plethora of sunlight from the skylight.
Flooring in the entire house is a terrazzo that is crafted out of scrap stone chips. Many of the furniture pieces at made from tribal pieces or reclaimed timber, including a console at the entrance by This and That and the old Naga Coffee Table. Multiple bamboo or jute furniture pieces and linens have been added not only for its comfort but also to bring in tactile layers that are healthier for the environment.
Living Room – Basked in muted, neutral colours of the walls and flooring- the living room is aptly welcoming throughout the day. Overlooking the vast cityscape, the outdoor deck from the living room is the perfect space for a soirée. This expansive space houses multiple seating arrangements that harmoniously bind the space for various occasions.
Bedrooms – Soothing colours with ergonomic furniture and a clutter-free environment adds to this comfortable space. Lamp by Ashiesh Shah on the side table. Bed and bed side tables are from Gulmohar Lane. The armchair from Bamboo Pecker. Bed linen from Sarita Handa and Fab India. Art in the bedroom on wall behind the bed by Sachin Sagare. The coconut object in the bedroom, next to the Bhagavad Geeta books is from a flea market in Paris.

It was hard convincing my family members on how I envisioned hanging the art and bringing together a curation of all things meaningful to each one of us on that one bookshelf in the living room. At first, they were very apprehensive, but ultimately, when it all came together, they love the energy.
