House of Textures

The house is built on 4-acre land. The brief was to build a farmhouse, looking outwards, on a large floor plate with two bedrooms but large living and dining spaces.

Design in Dialogue with Nature

From the time we saw the site, it was clear that the interiors had to be understated, to let the architecture of the house have a powerful dialogue with daylight and landscape. Materials that we shortlisted were raw, natural and textured to blend into the organic landscapes into which the spaces open. Stones, mostly locally available granites, were of varied textures, corten steel and natural teak, all of these were juxtaposed against large raw concrete surfaces.

Use of Natural Light

Every space in the house is flooded with diffused indirect daylight, either through large overhangs or through strategic orientations of sky light. And the interiors have been designed to allow for the light to playfully bounce off all its surfaces.

I think the most challenging part was practicing restraint which designing. To allow for the spaces to be detailed out and curated such that it creates a simplistic and effortless environment, complements its architecture and the landscapes it belonged to.

More about the project

I fell in love with the site and its dense vegetation. I have this thing for old trees, and the site was full of them. The trees looked so mature and well nurtured, and I was in awe when I found out that the trees were personally grown by our clients’ father. I knew instantly that the heroes in this project were the old trees, and the home had to have a beautiful connect with them.

We came into the project when the structure was getting built, and I think that was a great time for us to come in. Our goal was to establish a seamless relationship between the architecture, interiors and the landscapes.

Clients are my friends and what’s amazing is that I always loved their aesthetic vibe. I was very excited when they approached me, and looked forward to every single meeting/ trip, which were full of brainstorming over fun ways of bringing fun and energy into the home!
